What Should I Know Ahead Of Time?

Fostering Primer

Some states/agencies cover the cost of childcare for foster children, while others do not. The Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) can provide financial assistance to foster families for child care expenses. This assistance can help foster parents afford the cost of care for the children in their care, allowing them to continue working, attending training, or seeking education.  Be sure to check what it’s like in your area if you will need childcare.

Fostering Teens, Siblings And Other Special Needs

Some kids are considered “harder to place,” either because they are adolescents, part of a sibling group that hopes to remain together or have some special needs. Consider if you might be open to serving kids with these special considerations. You might be surprised to learn that no special training is needed to effectively care for kids with special needs. Learn more about these needs in foster care.

Trauma Sensitivity

America’s Kids Belong offers a FREE online course on understanding trauma and how it affects children and youth. Our goal through this training is to help people become trauma sensitive (able to actively incorporate skills and practices into interactions with children with trauma backgrounds). These modules will wet your feet in what will become a much deeper training if you move forward with licensure, and it’s a great place to start.

One of the best ways you can support foster families and the youth in their care is to understand trauma and the best ways to support them. These 7 modules (1 hour 45 min total), will give you tips and tools to be a great support!
