Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.–Helen Keller
This powerful quote by Keller could well describe the life of Ariana Rodriguez. Ariana joined The Foster Friendly Podcast recently and shared the backstory of her life which included a really difficult childhood. Ariana spent eight years in kinship care and two years in foster care, moving through approximately 20 different homes!
She described her formative teen years as being marked by instability and a lack of having a voice in decisions affecting her life. She faced another daunting challenge when at age 16 she faced homelessness after leaving the foster care system. However, her story was not over.

Leaning on supportive teachers and mentors in her life, she was determined to pursue higher education. While on this path of regaining stability and following her dreams through higher education, she turned to pageantry as a means to secure scholarships. She won Miss Kentucky 2025 earlier this year. Since then, her life has been a whirlwind of being a college student while frequently being interviewed in the media and doing all the things she does as part of her Miss Kentucky platform.
Ariana’s experiences in foster care inspired her to create The Lucky Ones Foundation, focusing on educating the public and amplifying the voices of foster youth. Her foundation offers the things she desperately needed in her life at a critical time growing up: things like life skills training and mentorship. The things crucial to preparing kids for a successful transition into adulthood.
Through her big platform as Miss Kentucky, she is working hard to highlight and amplify the faces and voices of those in foster care, ensuring that they feel seen, empowered, and heard. This isn’t just a beautifully redemptive part of her story, it’s her life’s mission and is fueled by the pain and adversity she’s had to personally overcome. Her life is also a testament to the support of others who surrounded her and believed in her when things looked incredibly bleak. It’s a powerful reminder of the influence we can have on the lives of those around us.
