Support in different areas across the US is different, but these are common supports for most foster parents.
Some states/agencies cover the cost of childcare for foster children, while others do not. They may provide financial assistance to foster families for child care expenses. This assistance can help foster parents afford the cost of care for the children in their care, allowing them to continue working, attending training, or seeking education. Be sure to check what it’s like in your area if you will need childcare.
Care Communities or WRAP teams may be offered in your area so you can foster longer and stronger. Because children in care often have unique needs, a support system like this is vital. Their job is to support families in practical, hands-on ways.
AKB provides training for faith communities that want to implement a WRAP program. If your area doesn’t already have WRAP, you can bring the idea to your faith community or a group of friends you think would support you in this way (see guide below).
Care Communities/WRAP teams can volunteer in a variety of ways, including:
- Helping with daily needs
- Making/prepping meals
- Transporting
- Providing child care
- Mentoring
- Doing house/yard work
Children in foster care are generally eligible for Medicaid (a government program to pay for medical needs). Specifically, children receiving assistance under Title IV-E of the Social Security Act, which includes foster care, guardianship assistance, and adoption assistance, are automatically eligible. Additionally, many states extend coverage to former foster youth up to age 26.
